A Fitchburg man is facing assault charges after police said he shot a man twice in the legs outside a Worcester strip club Sunday morning.
A Worcester Police Officer was working a detail inside the Riviera Show Club on 241 Southbridge St. when around 1:36 a.m., a patron was asked to leave the club and was escorted outside by security.
"The officer was walking outside to assist security when he heard several gunshots," police said.
The officer, according to police, saw 27-year-old John Mendez of Fitchburg pass a gun to another man, later identified as 25-year-old Alexander Vera of Lowell. The officer walked up to Vera and removed the gun from the man's waistband, police said.
Vera had a license to carry a firearm issued by Fitchburg Police.
As the officer questioned the two men, authorities located a man on the ground outside the club. The man had been shot twice in the legs. The victim was taken to UMass Memorial Medical Center--University Campus for treatment.
According to police, Vera claimed he fired the gun and Mendez said he never touched the weapon.
"This was contradicted by the detail officers' observations, as well as the security footage that captured the event," police said.
Vera was arrested and charged with misleading police. Mendez was arrested and charged with armed assault with intent to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and several firearms charges.
As officers tended to the victim, a 23-year-old Worcester man identified as Eliezer Delvalle, kept yelling at a group of males while being held back, police said.
Officers warned Delvalle to stop, but he allegedly continued to yell and walked toward the group of men with his fists clenched. Delvalle was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct.
Police have made arrests at the strip club in the past.
In April, an officer working a detail saw a Worcester man swinging a knife inside the club. The 33-year-old man, identified later as Miguel Martinez, tried to hide under a car in the parking lot, but was caught by police.
